CHAPTER 22

" H arold?" Elsa-May asked as the cardigan fell from her hands.

Ettie's hands went to her throat. "What was Harold doing in your car?"

"It's a long story."

Elsa-May leaned forward. "We've got all the time in the world."

Myra turned to better face her aunt and mother. "Harold is interested in murders, the same as I am.”

Ettie and Elsa-May looked at each other.

"We found the missing button near the dead woman!" Ettie repeated what Elsa-May had just said.

Elsa-May continued, "I know it's the same button because I kept it and brought it to the house. I still have it."

"Harold was there, though. It could've come off when he got out of the car. That button is just evidence that he was there. He's not a murderer. "

Elsa-May looked at Ettie. "Was he wearing this when we saw him?"

Ettie shrugged. "I'm not sure. I was too upset to see a dead person to look at what Harold was wearing. He could've been wearing it."

"Unless it came off in the struggle. Oh, Myra, why do you get yourself involved in these situations? Take us straight to the police station."

"I can't do that, Aunt Elsa-May! He's not the murderer. I just told you that."

"How do you know that for certain?" Elsa-May snapped.

Myra breathed out heavily. "Okay, I'll tell you the whole thing."

“Go on.” Elsa-May crossed her arms over her chest. Ettie put her hand on her sister's shoulder to calm her.

Myra took a deep breath. "Harold and I were in contact with each other before Jillian Doyle was killed."

Elsa-May’s jaw dropped open and she looked over at Ettie. Ettie shook her head in disbelief.

“I don’t know why you didn’t tell us that. How did you meet him?" Ettie asked.

"We found each other on the Internet. MurderMatch.com. It's a dating site for people who have an interest in murders. He was interested in murders, and I wanted to write about real-life murders."

Ettie was shocked. "Who would be interested in murders? Why is he interested in murders?"

"It doesn't mean he's a murderer, Mother. Many people are interested in true crime. I mean, it's real. It happens, and many like to hear about what's been happening around them, in their towns."

Ettie shook her head. "I don't like it."

"That's something we can agree upon, Ettie," Elsa-May said.

"Look, you asked, so I'm telling you."

"Go ahead. We're listening. I'm sure there's more," Elsa-May said.

"We got to talking about two murders that had taken place in this area. He got some inside information that Amish head coverings were found at two murder scenes. Those murders happened on the 30th of the month. So the next month, he drove close to where the victims were found. That's when he saw the two of you on the roadside."

Ettie looked at Elsa-May to see what she thought about what Myra was saying.

"You see, I was on the phone with Harold when he was in the car. He said he saw two old Amish ladies looking at something. He also said a fluffy white dog was sniffing around.
